This piece is the first natural artwork pieces we ever created. It was the first piece of wood I had ever seen like it, it was the spark that ignited my passion for natural art.
It was completed late in 2014 and has amazed every person I have shown it to, it is genuinely unique, something people have never seen before. I added lights to it and found it produced an amazing silhouette on the roof above it, a perfect nightlight.
The piece is varnished and is 130cm in total height and has a width of 40cm. It is mounted on a hand hammered metal base which is 50x35x15cm in dimensions. The hand hammered metal base was made by a local artist who hand beat the steel to give it an old fashioned feel.
After oiling and varnishing the piece a wonderful pattern emerged (the contrast of the yellow on black wood) the lighter coloured wood against the dark background resembled flames running up a tree, this instantly made me of think of fire, flames running up the trunk, hence “The Flame Tree”
Every part of this beautiful timber, every hole, contour, pattern, colour contrast was carved out by nature. It took decades of Australia’s harshest environments, scorcing drought / intense sun, fires, powerful winds and being eaten from the inside out by a range of insects.
